Employees in the Community HSBC employee volunteers

Helping the community has long been a part of HSBC's character and tradition.

The HSBC Group is committed globally to supporting education for disadvantaged children and the fostering of sustainable environmental practices.

Our employees feel a sense of pride that they work for an organization that plays its part in the community.

But more than that, our employees can get involved themselves. Every year, each employee is entitled to one day out of the office to do volunteer work.

Volunteer days encompass many tasks, from planting at the Botanic Gardens to feeding homeless people at a soup kitchen, to helping out with administration at The Cancer Council.

Our employees also participate in raising funds for the charities close to their hearts; through initiatives like "Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea" for The Cancer Council, "Jeans for Genes Day" for Children's Medical Research Institute and Barnardos' "Star of Wonder Appeal".

Our people also get involved with environmental events, such as Earth Hour (March), World Environment Day (June) and Walk to Work Day (October), raising awareness of sustainability issues.

"I just wanted to say that my team and I felt that the day was rewarding. We got to see how a large charity organisation works and really got to appreciate the work that goes into helping those in need. I would definitely recommend other staff to take part in a volunteer day to assist the Salvos the next time this opportunity arises."

"When we talk about Corporate Social Responsibility we often talk about companies helping charities. The heart of CSR however is people helping people to create positive social change. This is what Barnardos has seen in our partnership with HSBC. Their volunteers grow more committed and more passionate year on year because they can see their efforts making a real difference to the lives of so many disadvantaged children. HSBC volunteers contribute at every level of our organisation from governance to service delivery; this is truly an integrated partnership, not driven by commercial objectives but a desire to build stronger communities for us to work and live in and to create a better future for all our children."

Bill Petch, Marketing Manager, Barnardos Australia

"Through our partnership programme - Towards Sustainable Horticulture - HSBC volunteers have made a lasting contribution to our horticultural team. The volunteers energy and enthusiasm is matched by their commitment to our environmental programmes. This year, HSBC staff worked to restore Sydney’s iconic Australian Rockery demonstrating water wise plant selection and sustainable horticultural practice. We are delighted to work with HSBC and continue to be impressed with the organisation’s environmental focus."
