HSBC WARATAHS START SCORING FOR CHARITY

19 February 2008

Not only did the HSBC Waratahs kick off their Super 14 campaign in strong fashion with a 20-3 victory over the Hurricanes on Saturday, but they also started scoring for charity.

The Waratahs are helping a good cause every time they cross the tryline this season thanks to major sponsor HSBC Bank.

HSBC is donating $500 for every try scored and $1000 for every fourth try scored by the Waratahs to its Score for Charity campaign, which raises money for HSBCkids.

HSBCkids is the tutoring and mentoring program run by HSBC and children's charity Barnardos.

With a double to Lachie Turner and Rocky Elsom's 43rd minute try, $1,500 was raised in the opening match of 2008, which augers well for a big total by the end of the season.

"It's fantastic that getting across the tryline this year not only helps us on our way to a successful Super 14 campaign, but it also helps a great cause," said HSBC Waratahs Head Coach Ewen McKenzie.

"HSBC has been a loyal sponsor of the Waratahs for seven seasons now and it's great that we can help them give something back to those in need."

Stuart Davis, HSBC Bank chief executive officer said: "HSBC is a strong supporter of the Waratahs and a strong supporter of Barnardos through HSBCkids. We're proud to bring the two together for the Score for Charity campaign.

"The HSBCkids tutoring and mentoring program is a positive initiative to give disadvantaged children additional support and guidance. It's great the HSBC Waratahs are throwing their weight behind the program." For more information on HSBCkids, go to http://www.barnardos.org.au/HSBCkids/
