Getting Started

Exporting - Getting Started

Many growing businesses consider export markets. With international trade, your success depends on detailed research and knowledge of relevant rules, regulations and conventions.

What do you need to know?

Export Markets

  • Look at your market and identify products that are in demand
  • Attend trade fairs and exhibitions in the relevant countries
  • Talk to Australian missions and embassies for information on local trading conditions
  • Commission a professional organisation to provide you with detailed reports
  • Speak the language of your potential customers
  • Ask HSBC about our relationships with various Chambers of Commerce and government agencies that can help you penetrate international markets

Export Agents

  • Find a local agent or distributor in your desired market
  • Ensure they are financially sound, have a good knowledge of local conditions and can promote your goods effectively
  • Take legal advice before signing agreements
  • Check your potential representatives and agents through a credit reference agency or seek assistance from your bank

Confirming the status of your trading partner

It's essential you have a solid relationship with your trading partner. Before you enter into this relationship, make sure you research your potential partner's status with a credit reference agency, government agencies or seek assistance from your bank.

Export Licensing

Australia will prohibit, restrict or control the export of certain goods to specific countries through the export licensing mechanism. For additional information, please refer to Customs or your shipping agent.

Austrade

This organisation supports market research and development by Australian exporters. They have schemes to fund portions of research and travel costs, to be recouped in certain circumstances. They also make your life easier by organising itineraries, travel arrangements, visits and contacts for overseas trade missions.
