Importing - Getting Started

Your success in international trade relies on a number of different factors. Doing your homework is just one of these factors. Below are some helpful hints to assist you.

What do you need to know?

Import Markets

  • Conduct a thorough investigation of markets and suppliers
  • Research overseas products and manufacturers represented by Australian agents
  • Investigate details of upcoming trade fairs with local chambers of commerce and government departments
  • Seek professional advice to understand different terms and conditions in overseas sales contracts

Confirming the status of your trading partners

It's essential you have a solid relationship with your trading partner. Before you enter into this relationship, make sure you research your potential partner's status with a credit reference agency or seek assistance from your bank.

Import Licensing, Customs & Excise

Many countries limit the quantity of their imports, or restrict importation of certain categories of goods. Such controls are usually achieved through the imposition of import licences, quotas, duties or levies. All goods imported into Australia must be declared to Customs & Excise for the assessment of duties and other levies. This is usually the responsibility of the importer or their appointed agent. For additional information, please refer to Customs or your shipping agent. For more information, go to the Australian Customs website.
