All new HSBC Visa credit cards will be embedded with an Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) Chip.

better protect you from fraudulent and unauthorised use.
Improved security
From December 2009, all HSBC Visa credit cards will be embedded with an EMV Chip. This EMV chip is a microchip which offers you heightened security to better protect you from fraudulent and unauthorised use.
EMV chips have the capacity to store more information, and aren't susceptible to ATM skimming, which involves copying personal information from the standard magnetic strip.
New payment methods
Businesses are updating their EFTPOS terminals to accommodate EMV chip technology. When using your card for this new method of payment, simply insert or 'dip' your card into the terminal for the entire transaction. Whilst authorisation via signature shall remain the same, if you choose to use a PIN, you will need to key it in before removing your card.
If a merchant is not ready to accept this new method of payment, then simply swipe your card as usual.
More merchants each day are adopting this new, more secure technology. As a result of this shift, HSBC is providing EMV chips in all new Visa credit cards. This gives HSBC customers more confidence to use their card everyday.

Simply insert or 'dip' your card into the terminal for the entire transaction.
