HSBC credit cards cards are now embedded with an Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) chip to offer you a higher level of security than simple magnetic strip cards.
An EMV chip is a microchip built into your card. It comes complete with its own software applications and offers you greater capabilities. Most importantly, it retains more information in a more secure way than a magnetic strip.
Your new chip card can work in the same way as an existing card with a magnetic stripe, which involves swiping and signing for authorisation.
As businesses upgrade their EFTPOS facilities however, you will be able to use your card for a more secure transaction. The new method involves inserting or 'dipping' your card into the machine as opposed to swiping it. Your card will stay in the machine for the transaction and you will still be required to enter your PIN or sign to complete the transaction.
Better security: Your new chip card holds information with a higher level of encryption, and is better protected against ATM skimming, which involves copying personal information from the standard magnetic strip.
More information: Your new chip card has the ability to hold more information than a magnetic strip.
More applications: Your new chip card uses more sophisticated technology, providing you with access to more payment options.
The world is moving toward using chip cards as a more convenient, and more secure method of payment. We are developing our cards to stay on the forefront of this technology, already being implemented throughout Asia, Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
Your new chip card will be issued upon the expiry of your old card. Your existing card will continue to work as per usual at all terminals.
