How to become an Accredited Investor

Experience our bespoke Investment Service by becoming an Accredited Investor. Our service empowers experienced investors by helping you find the best investment opportunities, including diversifying your portfolio into new areas to grow your wealth.

Do you meet the HSBC Accredited Investor criteria?

HSBC offers you two ways to qualify as an Accredited Investor:

Have an accountant certify your income and assets

To qualify as an HSBC Accredited Investor based on your assets, you will need to meet the definition of a 'wholesale investor', as defined in the Corporations Act 2001. That means you need to:

  • earn a gross annual income of at least $250,000 (over the last two financial years); or
  • have net assets exceeding $2,500,000

This information will need to be verified by your accountant. You will also need to have investment experience, since this service is best suited to those with an understanding of financial markets.

Pass the HSBC Accredited Investor Knowledge Test

If investing is your passion and you have a deep understanding of markets and the products available, we offer you a unique way to apply to become an Accredited Investor. Demonstrate your knowledge, expertise, and ability to assess risks by completing the Knowledge Test then complete a signed declaration form.

The HSBC Accredited Investor Knowledge Test is an industry first of its kind, developed to comply with the Corporations Act 2001. It can qualify you as a 'sophisticated investor' if you show that you can assess the features of an offer, the values of various products or services, and the risks associated with holding a product.

Our knowledge test has three key categories: product features, product performance and product risk, ensuring that a wide range of the product knowledge is covered.

You must display knowledge across a variety of areas to become accredited. Topics that are covered include:

  • Equities
  • Fixed Income
  • Managed Funds
  • ETFs
  • Structured Products

How long does the test take?

The test takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

If you don't have enough time to complete the test in one session, your progress is saved for 30 days, so you can come back to it later.

If you fail the knowledge test, you can reattempt it again after two weeks.

To pass the test you must:

  • answer 30 multiple choice questions across 5 asset classes
  • get at least 80% correct for each asset class
